Yang Ruyi, a fashion magazine photographer, lives in a middle-class district in Taipei with her sister Yang Ruxing, a writer of detective stories. One day, Ruyi photographs by accident a couple making love in an apartment across the street from where she lives. To her surprise, she later finds out that the couple lives in the same neighborhood as hers, and that they are having an extramarital affair. She shares this secret with sister Ruxing, who is suffering from writer’s block and shows interest in the affair. However, as the plot thickens, Ruyi begins to suspect that Ruxing is in fact involved in the affair from the start. Her photos not merely capture the scandal but also complicate it.
As a former movie producer, Cho Li’s directorial debut parts way with the Taiwanese New Wave and shows more interest in making genre films and producing entertainment. Elements of sex, voyeurism, suspense, and murder are reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window (1954). Themes such as the bourgeois sense of order and disorder, crisis of marriage, chance, and the transience of modern city life are reminiscent of Antonioni’s Blow-Up (1966) and Edward Yang’s The Terrorizers (1985). The film also employs many “frames” closely related to “gaze,” such as photos, monitor screens, window frames, and surveillance videos. All these contribute to the theme of “voyeurism,” in particular female voyeurism. As a female director, Cho Li successfully presents on the screen four distinctly differentiated examples of urban women.
