Taiwanese Opera

Taiwanese Opera

“ditty” is the forerunner of Taiwanese Opera.  Immigrants from southern Fujian brought “ditty,” popular folk songs, to Taiwan which were sung and gradually developed into a kind of “xiao-xi” (“small opera”) in the rural areas of Yilan.  Later it was further developed into a kind of “da-xi” (“big opera”) and performed in larger cities.  It became the only form of traditional drama known to have originated in Taiwan.  For the past one hundred years it has been performed both indoors and outdoors and has proved highly popular.  Since performances were broadcast on radio, TV, and other media, and with the release of records and films, it has become Taiwan’s most representative dramatic form.
