Hakka Opera

Also known as Hakka Tea-picking Opera, “Hakka Opera” is a special form of Taiwanese opera performed by the Hakka community.  At the beginning, it was performed as “xiao-xi” (“small opera”) with “Three-role Tea -picking Opera,” but later it developed into “da-xi” (“big opera”), “Improved Hakka Opera,” combined with the music of “luantan”,“siping”, and “waijiang”.   Today, most Hakka Opera troupes perform outdoors, while Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe, the most representative troupe of Hakka Opera, presents refined operas indoors.
